Utah Valley University celebrated 80 years young during Homecoming Week, held September 20-25.
“UVU’s 80th anniversary, that is amazing! We started out as a small vocational school in 1941. This institution has gone through six name changes from a tech school to a community college, and now, of course, a full-fledged university. UVU means inclusion, diversity, grit, determination, high-quality education, and success. There is always a place for you at UVU,” said President Astrid S. Tuminez.
Surrounded by Utah’s most popular food trucks, students, alumni, and faculty enjoyed music from DJ293, prize drawings, bounce houses, and alumni booths. Cultural Envoy, the Spirit Squad, and the Green Man Group also took the stage to dazzle with their musical and tumbling abilities.
Following the performances, President Tuminez welcomed the crowd and introduced a new alumni job shadow program, allowing students the opportunity to spend the day in person or virtually with various UVU alumni at their work to facilitate engaged learning and career exploration.
“I’d like to welcome our alumni back to campus, and also, a special welcome to our future alumni, you are all forever Wolverines. UVU is celebrating its 80th birthday, we are getting stronger and stronger and all of you are part of that success,” Tuminez said.
Following President Tuminez’s remarks, the traditional lighting of the UVU letters included a new and improved pyrotechnics system as the crowd chanted the UVU fight song, led by the Spirit Squad.
When finished, attendees lined up to participate in the March of the Wolverines to the soccer field to cheer on the Women’s Soccer team. Waving her green and silver pom-poms, President Tuminez led the march from the quad to Clyde Field, followed by Willy the Wolverine, the Green Man Group, the spirit squad, students, and alumni.
The season-record crowd of 2,580 took their seats to watch reigning WAC champion UVU Women’s Soccer defeat rival New Mexico State, 2-0. The packed house sang happy birthday to UVU.
